GENDER CHAMPIONS CLUB (GCC), M. D. K. G. COLLEGE, DIBRUGARH

The Gender Champions Club (GCC) is a distinctive initiative to increase the outreach for creating an environment that fosters equal treatment at all levels – home, school, educational institutions, workplace, and the like. Government of India envisages engagement of Gender Champions in all schools and colleges across the nation. It is a joint initiative of the Ministry of Women and Child Development and Ministry of Human Resource Development.

The GCC of MDKG College was constituted on 25-10-2024 (w.r.t. D. O. No. 18-26/2015-U1A and OM. No. 4-2/2014-WW dated 3 June, 2015) inaugurated by Internal Complaint Committee (ICC) MDKG College, Dibrugarh on the same day, with due encouragement, support and permission of Dr. Anup Jyoti Bharali, Principal, M.D.K.G. College.The appointed Nodal Teacher is Dr. Bornali Nath Dowerah for the term 2024-2025. The period or term of Gender Champions shall be one year and can be extended further based on the decision of the Head of the Institution. The current list constitutes the names of the Nodal Teacher and the selected Gender Champions for the term 2024-2025, is as follows:

Objective:

The broad mandate of a Gender Champion is to provide an integrated and interdisciplinary approach to understanding the social and cultural constructions of gender that shape the experiences of women and men in society. The aim is to make the young boys and girls gender sensitive and create positive social norms that value the girls and their rights.

Roles and Responsibilities of a Gender Champion:

The responsibilities of the Gender Champion will include the following:

  1. Provide overall guidance to the peer group in integrating /mainstreaming gender in all activities of the Institution in the form of focused group discussions, debates, poster competitions etc.
  2. Engage a variety of stakeholders from the school, college, civil society organizations, women’s groups and media in gender mainstreaming activities.
  3. Identify gaps in school/ college’s activities vis-d-vis gender, and make recommendations on how to address these gaps, e.g., observe classrooms to detect bias in interactions.
  4. Promote Gender Champions Club in their educational institutions and undertake innovative activities, like creating a website or blog on gender equity and regularly writing an equity column on issues on, e.g. untold stories of extraordinary men and women who changed lives of women and girls, about enabling legislations, government schemes or about finding a new Gender Champion in his/her educational institution, or competitions to analyse greeting cards from gender perspective, organise film fest on gender equity etc.
  5. Organise awareness programmes on various gender issues including legislations to influence behaviour change. This could be facilitated through workshops, theme based plays, films, painting competition, etc.
  6. Organise the school annual function or the college fest on theme of gender equality and women’s empowerment and encourage students to sign up and express their support for gender justice and equality in attractively designed Gender Champion booths.
  7. Organise exposure visits to various public service institutions at the village, block, district and city level (public health centres, hospitals, post offices, banks, police stations, block office, SDM/DM office to facilitate knowledge about gender issues as they affect diverse populations.
  8. Popularise phone numbers of such services as police helpline, women helpline, hospitals among students.
  9. Arrange for providing necessary life skill education and information/guidance about existing public services to their fellow students.
  10. Demonstrate knowledge of important Government schemes, events, legislation, and court rulings which has a major impact on the treatment and experiences of diverse groups.
  11. Document best practices to measure the extent of behaviour change and display the same through exhibitions, fests, annual magazines etc.

Eligibility Criteria:

A Gender Champion should fulfil the following eligibility criteria:

  • Gender Champions can be both boys and girls above l6 years of age.
  • Should be enrolled in and regularly attending school or college.
  • She/he must have secured minimum of 50% marks or equivalent grade in the annual examination/school leaving certificate.
  • Excellent oral, written, and presentation skills.
  • Should have demonstrated leadership qualities.
  • Excellent understanding of the socio-cultural issues and prevailing gender norms and practices.

Selection:

The students shall be selected by the Head of the Institution in consultation with the student representatives as Gender Champions on the basis of their intelligence, decisiveness and honesty, which are absolutely essential qualities of a leader. The selection decision will also be based on whether the candidate

  1. engages him/her in visible and hands-on initiatives to reduce gender disparities and has organisational skills, including the ability to manage priorities,
  2. makes continuous and substantive time investments in mentoring his/her peers,
  3. is easily recognisable by students/peers as a supporter of gender equality,
  4. has experience in the field of gender equality, and an in-depth understanding of key issues and debates.

  • On the eve of ‘National Energy Conservation Day’ on 14th December, 2021, Eco Club organized a slogan writing competition themed as “Energy Conservation for the Future Generation”, among the students of MDKG College to bring awareness about the usefulness of energy and resources and its valuable usage in our day to day life as well as for sustainable development.
  • Principal of the MDKG College, Dr. Nibedita Phukan inaugurated the programme by delivering impactful words on the awareness towards energy conservation for the future prospects. Dr. Lohit Saikia, Associate Professor of Geography department of the college mentioned on the proper utilization of the resources around us. Dr. Rizia Begum Laskar, Assistant Professor of English department of the college has also emphasized regarding the importance of energy conservation in our day to day life.
  • Moreover, Vice Principal Dr. Anju Borah; IQAC co-ordinator Dr. Utpal Sut; and Dr. Shekhar Chakraborty Assistant Professor of Bengali department of the college have graced their presence on the day.
  • The programme anchored by Sangita Gogoi, Assistant Professor of Geography department and co-ordinator of Eco Club Mitali Sonowal along with all the teacher and student members of Eco Club as well as Professors of the college were present.
  • Around 50 students assembled the programme and 25 Participants participated in the slogan writing competition. It is to note that Sumpi Borgohain of Education department secured the 1st prize, 2nd and 3rd prize was secured by Prathana Handique and Mondira Chetia of Assamese department.

Activity No 2: World Environment Day- 2022, Two Day programme was organized on 4th and 5th June, 2022 at MDKG College, Dibrugarh, Assam

REPORT ON THE ACTIVITIES OF WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY-2022

On the occasion of World Environment Day- 2022, Two Day programme was organized on 4th and 5th June, 2022 at MDKG College, Dibrugarh, Assam.

  1. On 4th June, 2022, an Awareness talk on ‘Climate Change’ was delivered by the invited guest of honour, PADMASHREE AWARDEE– ‘THE FOREST MAN OF INDIA’- JADAV PAYENG.
  2. On 5th June, 2022, an awareness rally on the theme’ Only One Earth’ was conducted. Moreover, to fulfill the objective of plantation drive, MDKG College has planted around 20 indigenous plants (such as Bokul, Krishna chura, Guava, Neem, Arjun) within the College premise.
  3. Moreover, on the observance of the World Environment Day- 2022, Article writing competition and Drawing competition was organized among the MDKG College students. Further, Eco Club wall magazine on the theme ‘Only One Earth’ was also prepared.

DAY 1: OBSERVANCE OF WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY (4TH JUNE, 2022)

  • On the occasion of ‘World Environment Day- 2022’ on 4th June, 2022, Eco Club MDKG College organized an Awareness talk on ‘Climate Change’ which was delivered by the invited guest of honour, PADMASHREE AWARDEE– ‘THE FOREST MAN OF INDIA’- JADAV PAYENG. His talk emphasized towards bringing sustainable development, to act wisely for survival. He also emphasized to focus the aspects of environment more naturally rather than displaying it digitally. He also shared his life long journey towards his noble goal.
  • Plantation and Wall magazine inauguration was also done by the guest of honour.
  • Nibedita Phukan, Principal of MDKG College, presided the meeting and also delivered impactful words on the awareness towards climate change for the future prospects.
  • Faculty members and students of MDKG College also assembled the programme.

  • On 5th June, 2022, an awareness rally on the theme’ Only One Earth’ was conducted. Moreover, to fulfill the objective of massive plantation proposed by ASTEC on behalf of the Science, Technology and Climate Change Dept., Govt. of Assam for the day, ECO Club, MDKG College, Dibrugarh has also extended all support by planting around 20 indigenous plants (such as Bokul, Krishna chura, Guava, Neem, Arjun) within the College premises.

A Plantation Programme under the Scheme of Chief Minister’s Institutional Plantation Programme (CMIPP) in celebration of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ commencing from 15/07/2022 to 15/08/2022 was organised by MDKG College, Dibrugarh Assam on 3rd August, 2022. The Plantation site was undertaken at Dibrugarh University (Administrative Building Premises). The programme was graced by Dr. Jiten Hazarika (Vice Chancellor Dibrugarh University), Dr. Paramananda Sonowal (Deputy Administrative Registrar, D.U), Dr. Prasanta Kumar Kakoty (Controller of Examination, D.U) and officials of Dibrugarh University.

       Further the Programme was initiated  by Dr. Nibedita Phukan, (Principal, MDKG College), Dr. Anju Borah (Vice- Principal, MDKG College), Dr. Utpal Sut (IQAC Coordinator, MDKG College), Mr. Utpal Gogoi (NSS Coordinator, MDKG, College), Dr. Mitali Sonowal (Eco Club Coordinator, MDKG College), Ms. Sangita Gogoi (Member of Eco Club, MDKG College), Mr. Raj Jyoti Gogoi (Asst. Prof. Deptt. of Chemistry, MDKG College), The Office Staff, NSS Members, and Students of MDKG College.

        Moreover, 5 saplings (Fox Tail Palm plant) were planted by all the members present at the programme to mark the valuable initiative under the scheme of CMIPP in celebration of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, 2022’.

ACTIVITY REPORT OF YUVA TOURISM CLUB:

  • With reference to the letter from Director of Higher Education, Assam, Kahilipara, Guwahati-19 (vide letter No. DHE/EG/EYTC/183/2023/39, dated Kahilipara, the 26th September, 2023) regarding organizing event on ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ by ‘Yuva Tourism Club’ between 27th September to 2nd October, 2023, the following activities were jointly organized by NSS unit, NCC wing, Yuva Tourism Club and Eco Club of Manohari Devi Kanoi Girls’ College, Dibrugarh, Assam.
  • With respect to the letter, on 1st October, 2023, activities carried out were:
    1. Swachhta Pledge taking ceremony.
    2. A Cleanliness Drive within the College campus and nearby area
    3. Moreover, we also took part at the Mass Cleanliness drive to observe ‘Ek Tareek Ek Ghanta’ under Swachhta Hi Seva Campaign 2023 organised by Dibrugarh Municipality Board at DTP Dyke, Dibrugarh.
  • Active participation among the Teacher’s and the Student’s were observed to fulfill the Swachhta mission.
