About the Department
- Year of Establishment : 1963
- History:
The functioning of the Department started in the year of establishment of the College under the Headship of Mrs Anima Devi, who joined the college as a faculty member in 25.07. 1963 after she had rendered service in the D.H.S.K. College. Latter on Mrs. Alaka Boruah joined the department as Lecturer on 18.01.1966.Mrs Anima Dutta also joined the College on 01.07.1966 leaving after her service in D.H.S.K.College. After almost two decades of imparting education on Assamese language and literature, the department was then all set to obtain permission from both the Government and University to which the college is affiliated to, to introduce Major i.e. Honours Programme in the subject. Classes of Assamese Honours started from the academic session 1979-80. Along with fulfilling other procedural requirement, the then Governing Body also decided to create one more post of lecturer in the department to tackle the additional workload of the staff. In the meantime ,Mrs Minu Bhattacharya and Namita Chatterjee both from Sanskrit Department of the College were entrusted with additional charge of teaching some parts of the paper -Additional Assamese which included some contents of Sanskrit literature. In the year 1981, Mrs. Raju Boruah was appointed temporarily to meet the additional workload of the Department. Latter on ,the management published an advertisement inviting application for a non- sanctioned post of Lecturer and as a consequence Ms. Gayatry Devi joined the department against a non-sanctioned post on 17.12.84. In the meantime two new posts were sanctioned by the D.P.1. one each for English and Assamese Department. Ms Devi was appointed against the sanctioned post and as such her service was regularized. As the Two year Degree Course was converted to Three-year Degree Course another post i.e, the fifth post was sanctioned by the D.P.I..and Ms Anju Bora joined in this post on 02.03.1988.
In later period of time,., Mrs. Anima Devi took over the charge of the Principal-in-Charge of the College on 1-2-1992. She retired from her service in the same year (31.10.1992) and as per rules Mrs. Anima Dutta became the Head of the Department.
Mrs. Ratna Dutta Phukan joined in the vacant post occurred due to Mrs. Devi’s retirement on 24.08.1993. Mrs. Alaka Borua retired on 28.02.1995 and Mrs. Pallabi Bhuyan Dutta joined in this post on 01.04.1996. Mrs. Anima Dutta retired from her service on 29. 02 1996 and Dr Gayatry Devi Goswami took over the charge of the Head of the department. Subsequently Mr. Aniruddha Dutta joined the department on 01.08.1997.
Since this period of time the Department has tried to excelerate its activities both in academic and co-curricular aspects. In 1996,a literary society of the department was opened. It was named as Asomiya Bivagiya Chara with all the students of Major programme. The society with some specific aims and objectives has been trying to create a platform where all the students can interact with each other and can identify and explore their inner talent and creativity and also to give them exposure through the various programs undertaken and can use their off periods in a pleasurable way. In the same year decision of opening a Departmental Library was mooted and soon it was translated into action with collection of a few books donated by the teachers and students as well. The number of books in the library has gradually risen up to 300 (as on January, 2024) after the implementation of the library Committee’s decision to transfer a reasonable number of books of the central library.
Department of Assamese is the pioneer in the college to apply to the U.G.C. to hold a sponsored seminar and accordingly succeeded in receiving an amount of Rs. 20,000/- for organizing a seminar which was held 29th May 1997 with enthusiastic participation of students, teachers and many others. The Department has, although with its limited resources, been trying to explore in all possible way to make the students cultivate their talent. The Assamese Department published a collection of various literary composition of its students and the same was inaugurated on the occasion of Rajani Kanta Bordoloi (A noted Assamese literary giant) memorial lecture organized jointly by the department and the Dibrugarh district unit of Asom Sahitya Sabha on 13th oct. 2001. The department again organized an UGC sponsored seminar on An Enquiry into the Aesthetic Beauty of the Folksongs of NE India” in 2011. During the pandemic period, the department tried to continue its academic activities by resorting to virtual platform and accordingly organized two Webinars and conduct online assessment of the students.
