Manohari Devi Kanoi Girls’ College

       The tea city of Dibrugarh has a glorious background in the history of women’s education in NE. India. It was in Dibrugarh that first girls’ High school of the state was established by the local benevolent social activists with the help of British administration.  The then Deputy Collector of Lakhimpur district Mr Godfrey publicly inaugurated the school building on June,26, 1885. This school produced a good number of eminent personalities whose names are figured with golden letters in the history of Assam. Similarly in the scenario of higher education, the people of Dibrugarh also exhibited a wholesome zeal by being always active in founding various colleges and other academic institution all around the district in pre independence and post-independence period. When there were only 12 colleges founded in Assam since 1947, Dibrugarh Hanuman Bux Surajmal Kanoi (Shortly DHSK) College was being in 1945.

      With establishment of DHSK College, higher education was brought within the easy reach of the local people and many girls students enrolled. Gradually, number of girls students increased and then idea of a separate college for women was mooted. Later, the idea was translated into reality by the Governing Body of DHSK college which Adopted a resolution in its sitting on 29th August, 1960 to establish a separate women college in the memory of Manohari Devi Kanoi , wife of renowned donor , Raisaheeb, Padmasree Hanumanbux Surajmal Kanoi. Meanwhile with the collective effort from different social workers, philanthropists and academic circles, the process was expedited as some eminent persons of the state notably  Dr. L.P.Dutta ( later on, served as 1st Rector, Dibrugarh University) Govinda .C.Sharma, Punyaprova Das, Narendranath Choudhury  and many others   geared up  the  establishment of the institution . Finally, the proposed college was opened and at initial stage, the classes were held in morning session at Kanoi college premises with an enrolment of 215 students. and later on, on 5th of July, 1963, the foundation stone of the college was laid in a plot of government land  located in Kadamoni, about 1 ½ Km from the Dibrugarh town railway Station, by Dr.K.L. Mali, Union Minister of Education in  presence of Education Minister of the state and renowned Assamese poet, Devakanta Barua. The later one played a pivotal role in acquisition of government land for the college building and in obtaining concurrence and affiliation from the government and the university. The college was brought under the Defficit-Grant in Aids system and in course of time declared as provincialised college of the state.

      The college started functioning from the present location since 1965 under the principalship of Dr. Jogiraj Basu, a noted oriental and vedic scholar and in the succeeding years the enrolment of girls increased manifold. The college had offered both higher secondary and undergraduate courses (affiliated to state Council and Dibrugarh university respectively) to the students till a few years back. Of late, the higher secondary education from the colleges of the state has been withdrawn by the state government and simultaneously the institution has now focused more on UG and PG level of education.  It introduced Science stream in the year 2016 and a 2nd campus for this purpose was built within a few yards from the old campus.  Now the institution has an enrolment of about 2000 students both in Arts and Science stream. It started PG programme in Assamese from the year 2022 with affiliation from Dibrugarh University. 

      MDKG College pioneered in introducing uniform for students at higher secondary and undergraduate level of education and the college has still adhered to this dress code since 1966. 

     The college has been successful in earning a good academic and social accreditation within a short span of time and it has been recognised by the UGC as one of the colleges under section 2(f) & 12..  The college has offered different community services in various ways and means and has signed a good number of MoU with various organisation to extend its sphere of activities besides regular academic functions.

     The college, during the past 60 years of glorious journey  has created a student centric ambience of learning for holistic development of the students,   built  requisite  infrastructure,  earned fame by achieving academic and allied goals , participated in different ranking and assessment process at national and state level , produced a considerable  number of outstanding students ,taken active role in academic and co curricular activities and thereby  enriched the society through enlightening the women counterpart and ushered them to take part in nation building. The college was declared an AIDS AWARE COLLEGE by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Govt. of India. The institution constantly submits itself for assessment and accreditation process of NAAC and it secured 2nd highest score among the deficit colleges of Assam in the year 2004. Now the college is preparing to go under 4th cycle of assessment by NAAC and it has been the 2nd  among  all provincialized colleges of the state to get prepared for 4th cycle.

    Persons of high repute having long experience and expertise in various areas served as members of leadership, governance and management of the institution. The college has a qualified, committed and dedicated faculty to take cares of the students. Throughout this long years of existing, the college has proved itself to be an ideal college for women and it has been considered as one of the  pioneer  institutions of higher education in NE of India. The constant  excellent academic performance of both faculty and students , attachment to community lives and ability to create congenial atmosphere for all round development of students, availability of various support services and guidance the institution distinct from other institutions of the state.
