About the department:
The department of History was established on the very beginning i.e. 1963. The founder faculty of the Department was Mrs. Bina Choudhury, the former principal of the college. The Honours Course of the Department was introduced in 1988 by Dr. Deepali Barua, the then HoD of the Department. The History Department followed the syllabi of teaching program of Under graduate course as recommended by Dibrugarh University. The Department following the CBCS and FYUGP (NEP) course. The FYUGP course was introduced in 2023. The Department introduced the Add-On Course on Basics of Tourism Management in 2023.
Vision of the Department:
The Department of History aims to develop the knowledge of the past and its legacy’s among the students. It also aims to develop critical thinking skill through research and help the students to learn about own culture, identity and human behaviour.
Mission of the Department:
- Promote study of history and culture of the world in general and particularly of Assam.
- Prepare the students to be good citizen of the society through the study of history.
- Prepare for competitive exams and provide an idea of job opportunities.
- Develop the knowledge of historical tourism.

The department ensures effective curriculum delivery through a well-planned process:
- Teaching plan, proceedings of department meeting, time-table, attendance record are maintained.
- The department planned learning outcomes, department activity (field work, wall magazine etc.)
- The teachers provided teaching-learning resources and question banks, previous years question papers.

- Department has its own library. the number of books – and 7 booklets.
- There are internet facilities for teachers and students along with departmental laptop.
- Overhead projector facilities are available in the classroom.
Teaching Methods Adopted to Improve Student Learning:
- Computers are frequently used for comprehensive teaching. Lecture method is normally followed.
- Apart from this procedure, question and answering method, group discussion, audio-visual method, examination and tutorial-remedial classes, home assignment are arranged by the faculty.
- Participation in Institutional Social Responsibility (ISR) and extension activities.
- Many students participated in NCC, NSS programmes and in the various programmes of the college week such as singing, dancing, quiz, debate, recitation, sports, etc. The teachers are also actively involved in the college week programme.
Scholarships:
- UGC, OIL and government. of Assam scholarships are availed by the student.
E-resources:
- E- resources are given by the faculty members to the students.
SWOC Analysis of the Department:
- Strength:
Students of the department are showing good results in extra-curricular activities like quiz, singing, dancing, wall magazine competition and District, State, National and International Sports such as Kickboxing, Archery, Lawn Tennis, etc.
Students participated in the National and International Seminar and Conferences and presented papers.
- Weakness:
The department is lacking sufficient infrastructure and teaching faculty.
- Opportunity:
Limited students make good environment for teaching.
- Challenges:
Our Challenge is to popularize the subject among the students.
Future Plan:
Despite various constraints, the department has planned to subscribe departmental journal and arrangement of historical tour. Special lectures with external experts.

Message from the HOD:
The Department of history of MDKG College has been in action from the very establishment of the college and our department has significant contribution to the development of the college. Students are enrolled from different places of the district. Many of the students coming from under privileged sections of rural society. Many of the students also coming from the neighboring state Arunachal Pradesh. The students are not only efficient academically but also very active in extra curricular activities. Many students participated in NCC, NSS, various programmes of the college, inter-college competition and national level competition. Limited student make good environment for teaching. The Department formed History Study Circle under the guidance of Dr. Dipali Barua. The study circle organizes seminars, group discussions, easy competition, field work and extension activities. Our teachers tried to improve the knowledge of history. Our challenge is to popularized the subject.
Department Activities:
1) Celebration of World Habitat Day:
The World Habitat Day is organized by M.D.K.G. College, department of History in collaboration with NSS Unit. It is observed on the 1st Monday of October. It was first celebrated by the UNO. The purpose of it to reflect on the state of our towns and cities and the right of all for adequate shelter. Each year the UNO takes on a theme to promote sustainable development policies. On 1st Oct 2018 the dept organized a talk on the theme “Municipal solid waste management”. The speech was delivered by associate prof. Mr. Tikendrajit Gogoi, Head of the department of Zoology, D.H.S.K College, Dibrugarh.
2) An Extension Activity:
A children’s home ‘Prerona’ was visited by the teacher and students as an extension activity of the department of History on 20th March, 2020 for sensitizing the students to social issues for their holistic development and provide breakfast and sanitary pads for the girl child.
3) Field Study:
A field trip to Namphake Village, Naharkatia was organized by the department of History on 17th December, 2021. The objective of this trip was to provide the students about the knowledge of the social issues of Namphake Tai community and a historical survey on the Buddhism.
4) An Awareness Programmed:
An Awareness programme was organized on “Importance of Right to information and the ill Effect of Internet and Social Media” organized by NSS Unit of MDKG College in association with History Department of MDKG College, Dibrugarh on 21st May, 2022 at auditorium of MDKG College. The programme was organized to aware the students about the right to information and ill effect of social media and internet on the students.
5) Observation of Axom Divas:
Axom Divas also known as Sukapha Divas which is celebrating on the day of 2nd December every year to mark the arrival of the first king of the Ahom kingdom Sukapha in Assam. The department of History and NSS unit of M.D.K.G. College observing Axom Divas on 2nd December, 2022 at Nagakhalia village primary school, Dibrugarh. On this occasion a drawing and essay competition on Sukapha was organized among the students of village.
6) A Programme of Prize Distribution:
An essay writing competition was organized among the students of the M.D.K.G. College by the department of History, M.D.K.G. College, Dibrugarh on the occasion of ‘Bir Chilarai Divas’ on 5th February, 2023. The theme was ‘Contribution of Chilarai to the Neo-Vaisnavite Movement’. A programme of prize distribution of the essay competition was organized on 27th Feb,2023 where prizes and certificates were distributed by the principal Dr. Nibedita Phukan, Vice- principal Dr. Anju Bora and coordinator of IQAC Dr. Utpal Sut.
7) A program on book review on the occasion of 155th Gandhi Jayanti:
The Department of History organised a book review competition on the book “The Story of My Experiments with Truth” on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, on 2nd October 2024 and the prize distribution ceremony of the competition is held on 29 October 2024. The IQAC coordinator, Dr. Utpal Sut and the Head of the Department of History Mrs. Babita Bora graced the event and encouraged the students.

An extension activity was organized by the Department of History M.D.K.G College Dibrugarh to Popularize the Study and Scope of History for Career Advancement among the students of class IX and X at Nirmali girls’ high school, Dibrugarh on 4th May 2023.
